  • What is Hirouter?
  • Hirouter is a router operating system and software which enables a PC to be a dedicated router.
  • Can I test the Hirouter before i buy it?
  • Of course, you can get the RouterOS from our Download section. The demo RouterOS will be functional without valid licence for viewing, but can not modify the settings. No time limit,It gives you plenty of time to test the RouterOS.
  • Can Hirouter do what Cisco router can?
  • Hirouter RouterOS can do mostly everything as Cisco, but Hirouter is free, not charge, and have flexibility in upgrading, ease of management and maintenance.
  • What Operating system is used to run Hirouter?
  • You don't need OS to run Hirouter RouterOS. It comes with its instance of Linux Kernel which is very stable. Your hard drive will be erased by the instalation process. You just need to burn the iso file to CD, Primary Master HDD or FlashDisk
  • Is Hirouter secure?
  • Yes! Access to the router is protected by username and password. If needed, additional users can be added. Each user groups can be assigned to specific rights. You can limit Access to the router is protected by username and password. Additional users can be added to the router, specific rights can be set for user groups. Remote access to the router can be restricted by user, IP address. Firewall filtering is the easiest way to protect your router and network.
  • What is the default username and password for Hirouter login?
  • Username and password are 'admin', for the security please modify the password after the initial login.
  • How long can I use Hirouter licence?
  • You can use licence free forever.
  • Does the system could expire?
  • The system never expires. The router could run and upgrade forever.
  • How large HDD can I use for the Hirouter?
  • Hirouter RouterOS supports disks larger than 256M. But make sure the BIOS of the router's motherboard supports these large disks.
  • Which type of Storage does Hirouter support ?
  • Hirouter supports DOM /CF card/SD card or IDE/SCSI/SATA HDD
  • If I do upgrade Hirouter, will I lose my configuration?
  • No, the configuration is will not be deleted by upgrading. And you could backup the configuration anytime at any PC.
  • Can I statically bind IP's to MAC addresses via DHCP?
  • Yes, you can add static leases to the DHCP server leases list. However, DHCP is insecure by default, and it is better to use PPPoE for user authentication and handing out IP addresses. There you can request the user to log in from a specified MAC address as well.
  • Can I masquerade two different subnets using two different external IP addresses for them?
  • yes, you could achieve this level by Multi-Path Line Load balance and policy
  • Can I use as a bridge in one machine?
  • Yes. You can use set it working as a bridge.
  • Can I limit bandwidth based on MAC addresses?
  • Yes, you could limit bandwith via IP/MAC, or bind IP and MAC to achieve the limit level.
  • How can I pay licence?
  • For the free edition, there is no need for you to pay, just fill the blank to activate after the installation could be ok.
  • If the hardware has been replaced, need I change the router system too?
  • No. you don't need to change the router system. HiRouter system is independent from the hardware. HiRouter System runs on any machine which meets the basic requirements. You can replace the hardware without reinstall the system. However, if the hardware is damaged, you have to install the router system on good one again.
    Tip: you can install HiRourter System on one machine and deploy the disk on the other machine running
  • What can I do if I have forgotten the password of web management?
  • If you have forgotten or lost the password of web management, you can retrieve the password on the control panel. Follow the steps as following:
  • 1. Connect the machine with keyboard and monitor. Then you will see "Login:" on the screen. If there are some other information on the screen, please press "Enter" and the login notice will display.
  • 2. Input username "root" and press "Enter" . There is a notice for password inputting, then input the original password 12356. If you change the password in web management control panel, input the modified password to log in.
  • 3. When you log in successfully, you will see the configuration menu as following:
  • 4. Choose the first item, and there is a notice for the password setting. You can set the new password for web management here. Then press "Enter" to finish the setting.
  • Why the router cannot work well after I reinstall Windows operating system?
  • Trouble Description: install Windows operating system on the hard disk which has already installed HiRouter system. And the Windows system cannot work well after the installation. Trouble Course: After the installation of HiRouter, the program has been rewritten Master Boot Record. You must clean the record before you install other operating system or the program cannot work well. Solution: Through the Start up Disk into DOS module, run fdisk/mbr to clean the master boot record and then restart.
  • How many machines can one suit of HiRouter system software be installed on? One register code for one machine.
  • ADSL/PPoE dial-up dropped, and connected later.
    ADSL/DSL connects to the internet by PPoE dial-up. It is normal but sometimes the line is dropped. And there are such information in the dial-up diary:

    Trouble Analysis:
    After ADSL dial-up connects, the network is connected all the time, and the local data pack is sent once a while then waiting for the respond. Through this way, the network connecting can be detected. If the respond has received after certain sending, the network will be defined as disconnected. So it will disconnect and dial up again.
    Solution:
    The default time brake of the data package is 10 seconds, if the respond has been received twice it will disconnects automatically. By this way, if ADSL drops, it can be detects in 20 seconds. If your router has such problem, you can fix it by modifying the following parameter :
  • "device eth0 entered promiscuous mode" display on the control panel.
  • When the router has connects with the monitor, you will find there are some information display on the screen as following:
  • The above information shows that NIC has been in promiscuous mode which is for network audio process. In ordinary condition, NIC receives the data package related with its own MAC address, that is the data package from local to the host. If the other information of the audio network needed, you need to change NIC mode in promiscuous mode. Once the network has been changed into this mode, every data package in the network will be received not only the one related with its own.
  • Since "ARP attack detection" has been turn on in the router, or putty (SSH) has been used for traffic control, NIC need the audio data, then it will turn into the promiscuous mode. Because the audio data package has some influence on the network performance, the ARP attack detection is designed to perform Intermittently, the mode will shift between normal mode and promiscuous mode. Then you will see this kind of information on the control panel constantly:
  • The above information notice is set by the router, and the router system will perform certain maintain jobs timing.
  • Serial login function has turned on as default. If the serial login has been turned off, or there is no respond, the above information will show on the screen.
  • The information showing above is just notices which has nothing to do with the router's regular performance.
  • GRUB characters show on full screen when start up.
  • Trouble Description: after the installation of HiRouter system and restart, GRUB characters shows up on the screen constantly.
    Trouble course: the version of the hard disk is too old, or BIOS version is too old which doesn't support the LBA mode of hard disk for address searching. Solution: Enter BIOS setting, modify the access mode of the hard disk. There are Normal, LBA, Large, please try to choose Large. Hopefully, it will pass. But if it doesn't, please try the others.
    NORMAL:
    It is the earliest IDE method, when access to the hard disk, BIOS and IDE controller cannot transfer the parameters. The most number of cylinders of this mode is 1024, the largest number of heads is 16, the maximum number of sectors is 63 and the number of bytes per sector is 512, so the maximum of the hard disk is 512x63x16x1024=528MB. So in this mode, no matter how large the disk space is, it will take 528M only.
    LBA (Logical Block Addressing)
    The management of the hard disk space can be 8.4 GB. In LBA mode, the settings of number of heads, the number of sectors and the number of bytes per sector are not the actually parameters of the hard disk. When access to the hard disk, the IDE controller transfer number of heads, the number of sectors and the number of bytes per sector into the actually address of the hard disk.
    In LBA mode, the largest number of heads can be set to 225, the other parameter settings are as normal, then the hard disk space is 512x63x255x1025=8.4GB. Now BIOS of the new main board has been expanded INT13, so LBA supports 100GB above hard disk space. Large Mode
    This mode is for the number of cylinders of the hard disk exceeded 1024 and LBA is not available.
    LBA mode has been use most wildly in the three above, but not all the BIOS of the hard disk supports it.
  • Port mapping failed, what's the reason?
  • Mapping example:
  • 1. IP address of the mapping host is in the same network segment with the intranet router. Subnet mark has to be the same as the intranet router port, and the gateway must set as the IP of the intranet router port. Simply speaking, the mapping can get access to the internet through the router.
  • 2. The service port of the mapping host should keep on. It is to make sure that there is no limitation for the firewall of the mapping host.
    Before mapping, the mapping service of the intranet of the host, that is the web address http://192.168.0.100 can be opened as a normal webpage; after the mapping succeeded, on the test machine of intranet and internet http://211.x.x.x:800 can be visited by web server.
  • If the mapping doesn't succeed, please follow the steps below to fix the problem:
  • 1. Please check if the "mapping port" on the router has been turned on. Please notice that, if "DMZ" has been started at the same time, the mapping port will be disable automatically.
  • 2. Check if the setting of the mapping port on the router is right, or if the mapping port has been repeated? Or the type of protocol is right?
  • 3. Check if the host has meet the above requirement
  • Why I cannot pass the online verification ?
  • 1) Please do not contain any space characters when you fill the blank( just for this situation : you have downloaded the file before October 21, 2010 ). Because the new version after October 21, 2010 have fixed the bug.
    Example(Contact line): GREEN H. (error) → GREENH.(right)
